Dr. J. Alan Gilbert, born in Scotland in 1918, left behind a legacy of dedication, commitment, and respect. He was renowned as an exceptional clinician and a devoted mentor to medical students and residents. After completing his studies at the University of Edinburgh, he served in the Canadian Army during World War II. Settling in Edmonton, he started a private practice and later became a faculty member at the University of Alberta Hospital.


Dr. Gilbert's teaching spanned over 36 years, impacting more than 2000 medical students with his remarkable bedside patient care approach. His passion for medical education garnered national and international recognition, receiving numerous accolades and awards including recognition as a Master of the American College of Physicians.


His enduring legacy continues to inspire students, staff, and faculty at the University of Alberta, Harvard Medical University, across the US, Canada, and Europe.

Legacy Awarded

The scope and merit of Dr. Gilbert's work have earned him fellowships and accolades including several Teacher of the Year awards and the establishment by the University of a Chair in Medical Education in his name.


On April 17, 1997, Dr. Gilbert was a recipient of the Order of Canada for his service in the field of medical education.

Inspired by her father's passion for education, Nicole Gilbert started Westbrook Tutoring in 1992.


Having attended Tempo School in Edmonton, Nicole turned her focus to  families who have set high bars of achievement for their children.


For over 30 years, Nicole and her team have partnered with families to support the individual educational mandates vested in them.

    Our online tutoring experience replicates in person tutoring. We offer the same highly qualified tutors while students secure problem solving skills, and critical thinking processes coupled with a full understanding of subject material and concepts.

    It is online tutoring offered by our expert tutors, your student benefits from the expertise of our highly trained and experienced tutors, only online. The curriculum is the same and the methodology of pedagogy is the same. 


    Online tutoring is safe,flexible for families on the go and allows students to learn from anywhere, providing reliable and consistent support in the comfort of the student’s own home with tutors with whom the students have developed a long standing rapport. 


    Person to person online tutoring is personal and engaging in real time. 

    It’s assist parents in avoiding commuting arrangements and associated costs. 


    At Westbrook we do not use prerecorded videos for online instruction. We do not use mindless practice employing algorithms or games. Instruction is highly personalized, exactly mirroring in person service. 

  • What programs does Westbrook offer?

    We commit to helping students catch up, maintain their standing and accelerate for academic advantage.


    We offer test prep, assignment help, daily homework support as well as remedial studies during the summer or other school vacation seasons.

  • What grades levels do we work with?

    Pre-school-Grade 12. 


    Post secondary university levels including business, science, social sciences and arts courses. 


    We offer support in LSAT, MCAT, SAT and other standardized exams.

  • What are the qualifications of our tutors?

    These range from multiple degrees including engineering, business, science, education etc with up to 40 years experience to masters degrees with 5-10 years experience, as well as undergraduate degrees with 3-5 years experience.


    We have tutors who are currently in medical school, and other prestigious academic pursuits. We have a very small number of tutors who are in their undergraduate studies, these are priced significantly lower than members of our more highly qualified experienced roster of tutors. 

  • How is the Tutor Selection Process Executed and by Whom?

    We have highly qualified tutors across all subjects. Nicole, personally takes an academic history of the student to gain clarity on the mandate of the parent. 


    Price point is also important, as parents who want our most experienced tutors pay a premium for their vast knowledge and experience coupled with extremely high success rates.


    Student commitment coupled with other factors which may significantly impact their study habits are all taken into account when Nicole carefully selects the best tutor fit for each student.

  • What are your hours of operation?

    7 days a week


    Westbrook has a reputation for its tutors being incredibly accommodating to students who have busy schedules with sports and travel. Part of our culture, is that students come first. While we seek to establish a regular schedule, students often need to reschedule and our tutors are trained to accommodate the same.


    We do not overbook our tutors so they can be flexible to accommodate the fluctuating needs of students. We have a firm 24 hour cancellation policy. This allows us to retain premium tutors for the students we serve. 

  • How do we keep parents informed?

    Our tutors are trained to track student progress at every lesson. If there are concerns which need to be addressed, the tutor will let Nicole know and Nicole provides direct follow-up with parents in their preferred form of communication.
